What is Clarendium?
Clarendium is a free, browser-based maths game for children aged 5–11. Children practise addition, subtraction, multiplication and fractions in short story stages, with a hint and a worked explanation for every question. There are no adverts, no in-game purchases and no child accounts.
The Moonwell above is chapter one: a five-minute adventure in which your child mends a broken moon by building equivalent fractions (two quarters make a half, six eighths make three quarters, four sixths make two thirds). It ends with two questions answered without help, so you can see what stuck.
Which ages and school years does it cover?
Pick your child’s school year in England or grade in the US and every world opens at that level. England’s levels follow the national curriculum for mathematics; US levels follow the Common Core maths standards.
| Age | England | US | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5–6 | Year 1 | Kindergarten | Number Grove and Subtraction Shores: adding and taking away with numbers up to 10. |
| 6–7 | Year 2 | 1st grade | Number Grove and Subtraction Shores: adding and taking away with numbers up to about 15. |
| 7–8 | Year 3 | 2nd grade | Multiply Mountain and Fraction Falls open: equal groups up to 7 × 7, and halves, thirds and quarters of shapes. |
| 8–9 | Year 4 | 3rd grade | Times tables to 12 × 12 in England (10 × 10 in the US), two-digit sums, and fractions up to eighths. The Moonwell covers equivalent fractions. |
| 9–10 | Year 5 | 4th grade | Three-digit sums and differences, all times tables to 12 × 12, and equivalent fractions such as 2/3 = ?/9. |
| 10–11 | Year 6 | 5th grade | Sums and differences with numbers in the hundreds, times tables to 12 × 12, and equivalent fractions. |
How does a stage work?
- Your child answers five questions, each with four answer choices and no countdown timer.
- If they are stuck, a hint shows the method (“start at 7 and count on 5”) and leaves the last step to them.
- After every answer, right or wrong, a short worked explanation shows why.
- Three stages complete a world; progress is saved on the device so they can pick up where they stopped.
What will my child practise?
- Number Grove: addition, from sums within 10 to three-digit totals.
- Subtraction Shores: subtraction, checking each answer by adding back.
- Multiply Mountain: equal groups and the times tables up to 12 × 12.
- Fraction Falls: fractions of shapes, then equivalent fractions.
Two children can take turns on one device in two-player mode, and the practice library lists every stage. Division, money, time and shape are not covered yet.
How much does it cost?
Nothing during the preview. Memberships are planned at $9 / £7.99 a month for one child (Explorer) or $15 / £12.99 a month for up to four children (Family), with a year costing ten months. The first 100 families on the waitlist get 40% off for life. See the membership plans.
Questions parents ask
Is Clarendium free?
Yes, during the preview. Every world and the Moonwell chapter are free to play and need no account. Paid memberships are planned but not open, so no payment can be taken.
Do I need to download an app?
No. Clarendium runs in the web browser on a tablet, phone or computer. On most tablets you can add it to the home screen so it opens full screen.
How long should my child play each day?
One stage takes about five minutes: five questions, each with a hint and a worked answer. One or two stages a day is plenty; little and often beats a long session once a week.
Can I see how my child is doing?
Yes. The progress page and the parent report on the same device show which skills were practised, what was right first time and where a hint was needed.
Is my child’s data safe?
Children do not have accounts and we never ask for a child’s name, email or photo. Progress is saved only in the browser on your device. The only personal data we keep is a parent’s email, if you join the waitlist.
